While I always feel that every year is a great one for music, 2013 simply came across as exceptionally strong. From performances to albums, the year pretty much had it all and had it at a high level.

Twenty-one of our favorite LPs of the year are as follows (in no particular order):

The Invisible Hands “The Invisible Hands” (Abduction)
Mary Lattimore “The Withdrawing Room” (Desire Path Recordings)
Kurt Vile “Wakin On A Pretty Daze (Matador)
Cian Nugent & The Cosmos “Born With The Caul” (No Quarter)
Magik Markers “Surrender To The Fantasy” (Drag City)
Bardo Pond “Rise Above It All” (Fire)
Joe McPhee, Thurston Moore and Bill Nace “Last Notes” (Open Mouth)
Earthless “From The Ages” (Tee Pee)
Stephen Malkmus and Friends “Can’s ‘Ege Bamyasi’” (Matador)
Body/Head “Coming Apart” (Matador)
Bonnie “Prince” Billy “self-titled” (Palace)
Wiliam Tyler “Impossible Truth” (Merge)
Dead C “Armed Courage” (Ba Da Bing!)
Thurston Moore & John Moloney Caught On Tape Duo “Acting The Maggot” (FeedingTube)
Steve Gunn “Time Off” (Paradise of Bachelors)
Hiss Golden Messenger “Haw” (Paradise of Bachelors)
Daniel Bachman “Jesus I’m A Sinner” (Tompkins Square)
Steve Gunn / Mike Gangloff “Melodies For A Savage Fix” (Important)
Desert Heat “Cat Mask At Huggie Temple” (MIE)
Whatever Brains “Whatever Brains” (Sorry State)
Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt “The Raw & The Cooked” (Palilalia)

In typical fashion I am also sure that I forgot something noteworthy and absolutely crucial. Please forgive me in advance. (Above and beyond the aforementioned records). I am also exceptionally proud of everything that was released on Three Lobed in 2013 - Matt Valentine & Erika Elder’s “Fuzzweed,” Golden Gunn’s self-titled debut, Chuck Johnson’s “Crows In The Basilica,” Danny Paul Grody’s “Between Two Worlds” and the self-titled “Wooden Wand & The World War IV.”

Above pretty much anything else music-wise, 2013 was again defined by the Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, North Carolina from September 5-7). Music festivals are somewhat a dime a dozen these days – it isn’t hard to find one close to wherever you live that has a collection of great musicians on the roster. What separates Hopscoth from everyone (and I mean everyone) else is the total package – the impeccable artist curation, the great venues, the special (and, in many cases, free events – like the Three Lobed / WXDU day show) and the overall crowd vibe. I strongly suggest that you pencil it into your 2014 plans, no matter how far you have to travel. Early returns show 2014 to be another killer year – no surprise! I know I’ll be doing everything in my power to make sure that Three Lobed helps contribute to that!
