There’s a saying that you see bandied about with frequency at this point in the year, the claim that there’s no such thing as a bad year for music. 2014 has proven to be yet more proof of that statement’s truth. Folks who say 2014 was an off year are being purposefully contrarian or just don’t listen to enough stuff!

Thirteen of my very favorite full-length LPs of the year are as follows (in no particular order and excluding any LP I released):

  • Ryley Walker: All Kinds of You (Tompkins Square)
  • Daniel Bachman: Orange County Serenade (Bathetic)
  • Crime: Murder By Guitar (Superior Viaduct)
  • MV/EE: Alpha Lyrae (Child of Microtones)
  • Elisa Ambrogio: The Immoralist (Drag City)
  • Whatever Brains: SSR-63 / SSR-64 (Sorry State Records)
  • Bonnie Prince Billy: Barely Regal (Drag City)
  • Nathan Bowles: Nansemond (Paradise of Bachelors)
  • Ty Segall: Manipulator (Drag City)
  • Steve Gunn: Way Out Weather (Paradise of Bachelors)
  • Hiss Golden Messenger: Lateness of Dancers (Merge)
  • Apache Dropout: Heavy Window (Magnetic South)
  • Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler: Slant of Light (Thrill Jockey)

Lots of great live shows this past year, too ,with some particular highlights being Ryley Walker & band at the Hopscotch Music Festival, Tashi Dorji & Sir Richard Bishop in Durham, Lambchop performing Nixon at Merge 25, and Steve Gunn in Durham (twice). Never enough live music! 2014 also saw another fun and deeply scheduled Three Lobed / WXDU day show during the Hopscotch Music Festival. 2014 was also another fun year here on the Three Lobed front with some fun new releases and boatload of work towards a big 2015 (our 15th anniversary).
